Worship Assistants - Ushers

Responsibilities & Instructions for the Ushers at the 11:00 AM service

 

For this service there should be (5) Ushers - Four for the Sanctuary and One for the Annex. (Unless there is a special service that requires more.)

 

Duties prior to arrival of worshipers

 

  • Arrive no later than one half hour prior to the service. 
  • Attach your Name Tag and Usher Identification Tag 
  • Review the order of the service in the bulletin to be prepared for the service. Note: Offering time so you will be ready.
  • Check that all pews have sign-up pads and are neat in appearance. Check bulletin holders at all entrance doors to make sure they have bulletins in them.
  • If there is any questions regarding the service see the usher coordinator (Dick Lynch) If he is present or check with the pastor.
  • If there is a baptism make sure warm water is in the baptism pitcher on the altar. The pitcher is located in the cabinets in the prayer room. (Do this ten minutes before service).

 

Ushers locations

 

  • Two ushers should be located between the doors in the Narthex, Greeting and handing out bulletins. One Usher should be just inside doors of sanctuary to help worshipers find seating or any other need. The usher in Annex (left side) should be greeting worshipers and handing out bulletins. One usher should be on the (right side) near small annex entrance door greeting and handing out bulletins.
  • All usher should greet worshipers (by name if possible) with a smile, good humor and make them feel at home.
  • Be prepared to provide information about services offered at our church such as bathroom locations, Sunday school room locations, nursery location, office location and etc.
  • If a Outside Greeter or anyone else brings a visitor to you at the door introduce yourself and escort the visitor to a pew and introduce the visitor to another parishioner in the pew or nearby.
  • Seat late arrivals at appropriate intervals when hymnals and announcements are done.
  • Large print hymnals and children coloring bags are available.
  • Four chairs have been reserved for the four sanctuary usher on the back row.

     

    Duties during Worship Service

     

    • During time for children collect prayer cards and attendance pads Take the prayer cards to the prayer room and after service take attendance Pages to office reception desk.
    • Take count of congregation and record it in the attendance book. (on desk in the Narthex) Don’t forget to include in your count the choir, children’s church and all the children in the Nursery.
    • To receive the offering the four sanctuary ushers should assemble in the center aisle at the rear of the church. When the pastor calls you forward go up the aisle two by two to receive the offering plates. The fifth Usher will then come in from annex side and join the other four Ushers at the alter and receive there plate. After collection the fifth usher will join the other ushers by coming in from the annex side to the alter.
    • There are two types of Communion used at our church. a. Standard and Intinction Communions ( SEE SEPARATE COMMUNION INSTRUCTION SHEET).

     

    Duties at the completion of worship service

     

    • Immediately after the service look around and make sure those being ignored are acknowledge and give aide to any needing it.
    • Return all attendance pads to the pews, pick up all left bulletins and inserts and any other trash. (recycle box in Narthex for paper products) trash can for other trash.
    • Replace all hymnals and bibles to there proper place in the pews.
    • Empty the hymn board in the front of the sanctuary of the hymn numbers. Place all numbers in the box on ledge by organ.
    • If a baptism has occurred, remove the water from the font bowl and the pitcher by pouring it on a outside plant. Then dry out the font bowl and pitcher with a paper towel and replace lid on baptism font and return pitcher to prayer room.
